Turning engagement into Growth

The Challenge

Co-Angler helps friends plan fishing trips, log memories, and stay connected.
But despite high downloads, users weren't coming back after their first trip.

My Goal

Turn single-use excitement into repeat engagement.

The Problem

Users loved trip planning, but after the event, engagement dropped to zero.
There was no system to encourage return visits or reward activity between trips.

Here's what I found out

Mixpanel show the dropdown

Out of 1,000 users, 82% created and published a trip, but only 21% returned within a week.
Session time fell from 2.8 minutes to 40 seconds, and almost no one revisited trip history or social features confirming engagement ended right after the first trip.

Hotjar revealed the why

Recordings showed hesitation: long pauses, restarts, and users hovering over "Save."
They weren't sure the effort was worth it.

Turning Insights Into Actions

Trip Templates — removing setup fatigue

I designed pre-filled trip templates with the intention to cut setup time and turned one-time users into repeat planners.

Persistent Conversations — to build continuity

I designed to show trip status, allow host approvals, and enable in-app communication between members.
Now, users could chat, confirm plans, and stay connected throughout the trip turning a single action into an ongoing interaction.

Push Notifications — to drive retention

I introduced friendly post-trip notifications and highlights that celebrated catches and encouraged users to share, creating reasons to return.
